Nadine ATTAL, MD, PhD, is professor of therapeutics and pain medicine in UVSQ Paris Saclay University, Versailles, hospital practioner in Hôpital Ambroise Paré, Boulogne-Billancourt, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris, France and associate director of the U 987 INSERM research Unit directed by Didier Bouhassira.
Professor Attal graduated in neurology from University of Paris and obtained her PhD in neurosciences from Pierre et Sorbonne University, Paris. After working in general Neurology in Salpêtrière hospital in Paris for several years as resident and cliical assistant, she joined the Pain Center of Ambroise Paré hospital in 1996 where she developed most of her current research. She then received her habilitation to direct research, and was promoted Associate Professor then Professor. Pr Attal has played a leading role in translational research in pain, with the development together with Didier Bouhassira of questionnaires such as the DN4, which are largely used worldwide, the implementation of epidemiological studies and of prospective surgical cohorts, the application of quantitative sensory testing in painful patients, and the coordination of several therapeutic studies and international guidelines in neuropathic pain. Pr Attal has published more than 170 papers in leading journals such as Lancet Neurology, Ann Neurology, Neurology, Brain and Pain and has an H index of 64. She is Section Editor for the journal British Journal of Anesthesia and Pain Reports. She has coordinated multiple workshops or international teaching courses and has given plenaries at international congresses including a plenary at the World Pain Congres of the IASP (Buenos Aires 2014), the Edmond Charlton lecture at the NeuPSIG Congress in 2018 (London, 2018) and the Rynd lecture at the Irish Congress of Anesthesiology (e-lecture, may 2022). She is member of the Council of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and of the scientific council of the European Academy of Neurology. She has been appointed “chevalier de la lésion d’honneur” (knight) in 2016, has received a prize from the French “Académie des Sciences” in 2017, the 2919 price from Fondation Institut de France, the Rynd Award for her carrier from the Irish Society of Anesthesiologists in May 2022 and the first Axel Kahn “Douleur et Cancer” prize in december 2022 together with Dr Didier Bouhassira.
