Abstract Description
Institution: University of Zaragoza - Spain
Objective: To describe the clinical features of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome included in the surgical waiting list in Aragon.
Methods: Cross-sectional study. CTS patients included in surgical waiting list of sector II of Aragon (Spain) were selected. Sociodemographic variables and Health determinants such as physical activity, presence of comorbidities, bilaterality of symptoms, and time between first medial visit to surgeon visit was recorded. For symptoms, pain, nocturnal symptoms and paeresthesia was examined by Visual Analogue Scale. For sensitivity, Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments and Upper Limb Neural Test 1 was carried out. Grip strengh was measured. Finally, Boston questionnaire, SF-38, MOS-sleep scale and Tampa scale for Kinesiophobia was used to know the patients' quality of life and function
Results: 42 patients (24 females; 59.1±12.7years) were included. 81% had a severe condition and 78.6% had any comorbidity. 365.5 days was the average number of days between the first medical visit and the surgeon's visit. Paraesthesia was the most intense symptom perceived by the patients. Mean strength was 19.5 kg and sensation was decreased in all fingers. Quality of life and quality of sleep showed reduced values in the questionnaires.
Conclusions: Different variables may contribute to the status of patients on the waiting list in Aragon. Both social determinants and clinical variables should be considered when examining and treating CTS patients. Further studies should be conducted to gain insight into whom and how these cases should be processed.
