Abstract Description

Anne Louise Oaklander will review the classic dysimmune organ-specific neuropathies such as CIDP and paraneoplastic neuropathy that established the concept and identified effective treatments, plus systemic autoimmune conditions such as Sjögren’s syndrome and MGUS that add risk for painful neuropathy. She will discuss the indirect evidence that some specific focal and widespread pain syndromes including post-surgical neuropathies and otherwise idiopathic small-fiber polyneuropathies sometimes have immune causes. She will emphasize the need for patient selection, objective testing to prove neuropathy and conditions to exclude. She will solicit audience voting for the hot topic of what evidence is necessary to prove underlying immune causality, and to exclude it. She will provide a balanced review of the evidence of efficacy and safety of specific immunotherapies, and concerns about indiscriminate prescription.
