Abstract Description

If preclinical studies are used to inform future research decisions in pain, then their design, conduct, analysis, and reporting must be rigorous, and their results disseminated in a timely and unbiased manner. In this talk, Dr Nadia Soliman will share her perspective as a meta-researcher and discuss what the causes of the reproducibility crisis and translational failure may be (likely fuelled by an incentive structure that values publication and grant-funding records which have led to a large volume of research that is characterized as poorly designed and of low statistical power, p-hacking, harking, and publication bias).  She will highlight the benefits for research and the research community of adopting open science practices to address the challenges we face. She will signpost to the tools and resources that are freely available to support the delivery of responsible research including systematic reviews, preregistration, open data, open materials, and open access publication. She will demonstrate that we can all contribute to a culture of responsible research to improve the value of preclinical pain research.
