Professor Helen Slater

Professor Musculoskeletal Pain - Curtin University

Professional Bio

Professor Slater is a senior clinician-researcher. She co-leads a program of research focused on system-wide reform in musculoskeletal pain (systems/policy, health services and clinical interface). Her clinical research includes a focus on QST in neuropathic pain conditions. Over the past 2 decades, she has co-led a program of funded policy-into-practice initiatives to support system-wide reform in musculoskeletal health. This research reaches across systems (from upstream at the macro level: health/educational sectors), downstream into health workforce upskilling (meso level: university/ professional bodies; interdisciplinary/discipline-specific initiatives) and into clinical settings (micro level: consumer/clinician real world practice). Using industry-embedded and collaborative partnership models of translational research that extend consumer and health workforce capability in knowledge translation, her team’s focus is on systems strengthening and resilience building aligning closely with ‘The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’, with a focus on SDG 3 (Good Health and WellBeing). Her team’s innovative research on the use of digital technologies has achieved global reach and impact, for example, painHEALTH, Australia’s first online platform developed ‘with consumers for consumers’ with musculoskeletal pain (>48 million hits since April 2013; accessed globally by > 152 countries) and youngpainhealth - a new digital platform co-created with young people and clinical pain experts to support the care of young people living with chronic musculoskeletal pain.
